Castiglia 1888, goodness has a contemporary heart

Inaugurated in March of 2013 by Salvatore Castiglia, a man full of imagination and creativity, a local citizen whom everyone called “Totò”, it is a butcher shop, a fine food emporium, a restaurant, and a wine bar and is, all together, among the most widely popular and well considered spots in the entire city center of Caltanissetta.  Totò himself passed away in December of the same year, leaving to his family, his friends, and to his many admirers a lesson of courage, a healthy sense of entrepreneurial energy, a sense for quality, and a love of beauty. Clean, colorful, and welcoming, the spot’s takeaway food – prepared by Maria with seasonal products – is fully in evidence in the entranceway. Just opposite is the counter of the butcher shop with the finest cuts of Sicilian, Italian, and international meats, available as well among the prepared products in the entrance hall. To the left, again on the ground floor, is a space with the wines, served by the glass, beer, and food to nibble on as an accompaniment.

On the floor below there is a room in contemporary style with some twenty covers. Giuseppe and Lucia, Totò’s children, take charge of serving clients. Among the dishes offered: a selection of cheese and charcuterie, fresh vegetables, tripe in a sauce, steak tartar of Modica beef with olive oil and pepper, noodles with fava beans and ricotta cheese. Worth mentioning are the Angus, Chianina, and Modica beef, all wisely left to hang for a more than a month before being served. And a fine selection of wine and beer.
